I went to a “pep” rally today. An “academic” pep rally (read “academic” as a testing). As a school we celebrated those who scored the highest possible score on the test last year. There were twelve who scored very high (guess the demographics). Students and teachers did skits, there was a clever poem, the math department had a poster sized bar graph of how our school compared to the others in our district…
I hate that this was the first ever “academic” pep rally and that it was brought on by the fact that we need to get our test scores up. There were no outstanding papers, or debates recognized, not one academic scholarship mentioned, no academic honors beyond high test scores. But dang they did good on them tests…
