I didn’t realize how long it has been between posts until a couple of days ago.
Some stuff that has been going on in the roughly two months I have been off line.
- Took the freshman football coaching job at the high school. Started practice July 15th (goodbye nights and weekends)
- July 21st Decided to remain Asst. AD (goodbye any other “free time”)
- July 24th-26th Went to a faculty retreat that was serious and great and developed a real sense of purpose and direction among the faculty as a learning community
- August 9th , Started school
- August 10th, find out that almost every senior in my Geography class signed up for school service (Aide) so they dropped, leaving me with 2 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 4 sophomores and 10 Freshmen in a class that was a “must have because of numbers interested”. Never mind that I am the least qualified person in the department to teach the class and that removing a US History section punched my and my counterpart’s US History classes to over 30 each when they could have been in the mid-20s. (there is a conspiracy theory that will likely make another post)
- August 10th, Received the new US History textbook (the one we chose because we didn’t want to wait for the one that needed state board approval making it harder to get in before school started)
- August13th Were told that the primary source reader we want was just ordered and won’t be in until “October something”
- August 31st realized that we will have more than 30 instructional days disrupted by everything from clubs to field days before the year is over.
- September 1st decide we should probably buy and send out invitations to the daughter’s B-Day party that happens at the end of the month (gave the last one out today 9/19)
- September 3rd-ish realized that everything that was said and done at the retreat was total bullshit, especially the stuff about academic standards and consistency (see August 31st).
- September 18th Wife who is 6 weeks into a new kick-ass gig and a few days away from entering her third trimester was told see needs to be on “complete bed rest” for at least two weeks and possibly hospitalized after that.
- September 19th realize that we have amazing friends and family who care for us deeply and have offered their hearts and time to help us out as we contemplate what the hell we’re going to do to get by over the next three months.
So… been a bit busy… more when I can breathe.
