A Sick Child=Whipped Parents

My 2 and ¾ year old daughter went through her first real illness this weekend. She is normally the most independent, outgoing, vivacious person in the house so we knew something was wrong when she refused to leave my lap or remove her head from my shoulder Friday afternoon. Our weekend was dominated by a scared, confused, angry, puking little girl who would barely speak three words. We parents slept little as every night time sound had us bounding to her side hoping to get the trash can in front of her before she redecorated her sheets and night gown (one 3am sheet and clothing change was enough). Meanwhile my helpful visiting father and throwing out gems like “You don’t think it’s meningitis do you? That’s why the triage nurse kept asking you about neck pain on the phone you know”. Thanks for the help pop.

Naturally the moment we made an appointment with the emergency children’s clinic her fever broke and she came swiftly back to the land of the living.

My wife and I are left trying to recover from an illness that neither of us had but may as well have…did I mention Mrs. Smithie is due in December with number 2? I suppose we are gluttons for punishment.

I’ll try to get back to regular posting. As I prepare for the fall and a new school year I have begun –finally- to reflect on last year and I have some thoughts to share that go beyond my “Star Wars nerd” posts.
