This weeks reference is local in nature. The Lexington NPR affiliate had an accidental budget shortfall and had to hold an emergency four day fund drive before theend of the fiscal year. During the announcment they palyed the Imperial March sometimes called "Vader's Theme". This showed up in Episode V the Empire Strikes back.
anyone see one that I missed this week?

Well, I did say to my girlfriend this week: "We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?" :)
Duuude seriously. Any thoughts on the importance of mass media references to gen X?
To gen-X things or gen-X itself? I think the Transformers movie is somewhat of an example of both. (Btw, I saw it this evening and I'm a happy man; Optimus Prime is back in the house, son!)
Whenever I catch such references (Star Wars, etc.) I think: Man, the dude making this loves this shit as much as I do. While that may be true at the end of the day, it's still boils down to savvy marketing and ultimately gives you that icky feeling. :) I'll just let it all persist in my heart... ;)
Marketing is absolutely on but I think references outside of mass media (personal life etc...) like the one you mentioned in you previous comment are a part of gen-x culture. We make subtle and not so subtle references constantly. It's kind of code for letting people know who you are and what you're in to. It's a way of asking without asking "are you in or out?" Maybe I'm wrong maybe every gen. has it's references that are quietly worked into conversation for response measurement and i just miss them all. Am I Han on this or is there something to it?
