Gramma Would Approve

My grandmother, Ida May was an active member of the social activist Gray Panthers. She was a social activist to say the least. 20/20 did a hidden camera sting on crooked funeral homes in her house she ran for office in Phoenix in her early 80’s so that the republican candidate couldn’t sneak into office un-opposed (her campaign colors were hot pink and gray) among other things. I tend to hold her up on a bit of a pedestal when it comes to social action, so when I saw this article on the Anti War Grannies over at the Quaker Agitator I couldn’t help thinking of her. If she wasn’t a part of this fine women’s group she would have smiled when she read about their action as I’m sure she’s smiling with them wherever she is now.

A tip of the deep blue hat to you Gramma...

From the article:

PHILADELPHIA -- A judge dismissed defiant trespass charges Friday against a group of anti-war grandmothers who had refused to leave a military recruiting office after trying to enlist.

After reading this post my sister told me that my Grandmother was a part of a similar protest over the health insurance of seniors being worse than those of soldiers. They staged a mass attempt to enlist so they could get military bennies. I suppose she was closer to them than I thought.
