Smithie,
Let me guess -- you went for the purple light saber, didn't you?
;)
Actually I took the simple blue one...but I couldn't keep out of the Falcon. Seriously, if Mace has a ride that's it man...
The problem with Mace's lightsaber was that it was a foofy shade of purple, and he ran funny.
The problem with episodes I-III is that they lacked the emotional balance of episodes IV-VI. There's no comic relief. There's no banter. The scripts plod along. I say this not as a "Lucas Basher," but as someone who loved, loved, LOVED these movies and had all the dialogue memorized.
Princess Leia was a smartass. Han Solo was a smartass. Even Obi-Wan could be a smartass. There was laughter even in the midst of this great struggle against evil.
Hayden Christiansen's acting is atrocious, although the direction and scripts he was given certainly didn't help. NOBODY but Tarkin pouted in the first movie. "It's not fair" should NEVER show up as a line in a Star Wars film, much less become a mantra for what ends up being THE main character.
Whew! I feel better now!
Ms. C you speaketh the truth on a sacred subject. IV-VI are the only SW movies that create a myth of any value. The others are marketing ploys designed to sell merch.
