The Education Wonks have this bit of news on teachers being shot in front of their students. I can’t whine about my own situation when this is going on in another part of the world, especially when it’s going on in a place that “we” decided to occupy with no plan to execute the occupation successfully.
HOWEVER (whining anyway), I can hear the under the breath rumbles from my students when we talk about this tomorrow “whish someone would do that here”. Hopefully I’m being overly cynical. But honestly most students (thank god?) have no understanding or feeling for real violence against humans. Unfortunately it seems that the powers that be don’t either…
[Apparently the report has been disputed but the point stands]
[Follow-up on class discussion: In every class EVERY CLASS, someone said something like "I wish it would happen here"...How in the hell do you talk to kids about the horrors of real violence and have them feel the weight of it? I know that sometimes humor isth only tool we have to cope, but I do feel that this is a real problem. Violence is NOT the means to an end and I believe we need to teach it that way.]
