Stanley Tookie Williams will likely be executed tonight. Over the last several days his case has opened up a discussion in my government classes about the role of the people and the role of the government in attempting to define justice. Students are asking good questions and discussing the issues surrounding the death penalty with concern and intelligence. It seems that Mr. William’s road to reform has opened the door for good conversation in a classroom. I am interested to hear what the students will say tomorrow.
I don’t know much about Mr. Williams beyond the recent news stories. I do know that he has impacted my classroom in a positive way and that it seems that he has done the same for other classrooms. Does his execution serve the larger cause of justice? What cause WILL killing him serve?
