Charter Scools and Public Education

The Arizona Dailey Star ran this story yesterday about charter schools in AZ and how Universities are taking notice of their innovative programs and well prepared students. The things that should be known about charters are:

  • No State testing requirements though they do get some sate money.
  • You don’t HAVE to be a certified teacher in order to teach at one. Many of the teachers are professionals who wanted to teach but not go back to school.
  • Small class size and schools mean ideal education situations.
  • Innovative curriculum not hamstrung by state requirements.
  • They usually require tuition.

In short the “passing fad” of charter schools has hung on and been great for kids through the loosening of regulation and finding people who put teaching and students at the forefront, not bureaucracy and politics. AND you can have all of this as long as you can pay for it. Meanwhile it’s harder to become a certified teacher in a public school, the paperwork and adherence to strict state guidelines usually runs the people who want to teach and help kids off before their third year. The tinfoil hat wearing side of me says there is movement afoot to eliminate free public ED from our country.
