Gay High School Students and Free Speech

Picked up a story from Peek a blog on Alternet. It seems a group of high school students has written some stories on gay student life in their school. Naturally the principal censured the article. While the case may get picked up by a news wire I don’t think the courts will strike down their Principal’s authority to censor the school newspaper.

As a school teacher I love it when the kids realize they can impact their community for the better. The kids in this situation seem to have seen an opportunity to open eyes and provide insight into a world many are affraid to admit even exists. I think these kids are brave on several fronts. First, they are the lowest of all life forms in many people’s eyes…they are teenagers. Second they are taking on one of the hottest civil rights issues in the country…gay rights. Third, they have to be catching some major hate from their local peer pressure network, California or not.
